About riding in Portugal

Portugal has a claim to being the finest riding destination in Europe. It is home to the Lusitano β€” one of the oldest and most beautiful horse breeds in the world, prized for centuries by the Portuguese royal court and still bred here to an extraordinary standard. Riding a well-schooled Lusitano is an experience unlike any other: these are horses of exceptional sensitivity, athleticism, and character, and they reward riders who ask with lightness rather than force.

The landscape is equally varied. The Alentejo region β€” rolling plains of ancient cork oak, whitewashed villages, and vineyard estates β€” provides some of the most peaceful trail riding in Europe. The Algarve coast offers dramatic clifftop riding above golden Atlantic beaches and stunning sea-carved rock formations. The Douro Valley, Serra da Estrela, and the Minho in the north offer wilder, more mountainous terrain for those seeking something more challenging.

Portugal has a mild Atlantic climate that makes it rideable almost year-round. Spring (March to May) is spectacular β€” wildflowers across the plains, green hills, and warm but not hot temperatures. Autumn is equally beautiful. Summer in the Alentejo can be intensely hot; the coast is cooler and more forgiving.
