About
The Alentejo region of south-central Portugal is quiet, unhurried, and extraordinarily beautiful — golden plains dotted with ancient cork oaks, whitewashed villages, and vineyard estates producing some of Europe's best wines. Riding through it on a Lusitano horse is a privilege.
This operation, based near the walled Roman city of Évora, uses pure and part-bred Lusitanos — the Portuguese national breed, renowned for their intelligence, athleticism, and extraordinary sensitivity. These are horses that reward subtlety: riders who ask quietly get the most from them.
Routes wind through working quintas (estates), across open farmland, and through the cork oak montado forest that is unique to this region. Multi-day rides with overnight stays at country estates are the speciality.
Getting There
Fly into Lisbon (LIS). Évora is approximately 1.5 hours by car or direct bus from Lisbon. By train, services run from Lisbon Oriente to Évora (approx 1.5 hours). The stable can arrange transfers from Évora.

Three days in the Alentejo on a dapple grey Lusitano called Fauno — one of the best riding experiences I've had anywhere. These horses are extraordinary: sensitive, athletic, and with a lightness of movement that makes an ordinary canter feel like floating. The spring wildflowers were at their peak, the evenings were warm, and the food and wine at the quinta were exceptional. This is what riding holidays should be.
