About

The West Bank of Luxor is extraordinary even without a horse — but on horseback, passing between ancient temples, along irrigation canals, and into the desert hills that hide pharaonic tombs, it becomes something else entirely.

The stables here are small operations, often family-run, that have been taking riders across this landscape for generations. Routes typically include the approach to Medinet Habu (the mortuary temple of Ramesses III), the Colossi of Memnon, and the agricultural plain between the Nile and the desert escarpment.

Early morning rides — before the coach parties arrive — are the most special. The light at dawn over the Theban hills is unforgettable.

Getting There

Fly into Luxor International Airport (LXE) or travel from Cairo by train (approximately 10 hours overnight) or internal flight. The West Bank is reached by local ferry from the East Bank — a short crossing of the Nile, costing very little. The stables are a short tuk-tuk or bicycle ride from the ferry landing.

Who is this for?

Good for

  • Riders with a genuine love of ancient history and archaeology
  • Those wanting an early morning, quiet, off-the-tourist-track experience
  • Confident riders happy on wiry, nimble Arab horses
  • Budget travellers — this is extraordinary value for money

Not ideal for

  • Complete beginners — routes involve varied terrain and some pace
  • Riders expecting a structured, modern riding school environment
  • Those visiting in summer — heat makes early morning rides essential

An extraordinary morning. We rode at dawn across the West Bank plain, with the temperature still cool and the light turning golden over the Theban hills. Our guide — a local man whose family has farmed this land for generations — took us along routes most tourists never see. Passing the entrance to the Valley of the Kings on horseback, with no other visitors around, was one of the most quietly powerful experiences I've had. The horses were wiry Arabians, sure-footed on the desert paths.
