About

Dartmoor National Park is one of England's great wild places, and riding across it is a genuine pleasure. This centre, based near Princetown in the heart of the moor, has direct access to thousands of acres of open common land — you can ride for hours without encountering a road.

The horses are a mix of native breeds and crosses, chosen for their suitability to moorland riding. They're robust, sensible, and at home in the boggy terrain. Guides are experienced and knowledgeable about the moor's history, wildlife, and (importantly) safe routes through the boggy sections.

Suitable for all levels, though beginners should book an introductory session first. The centre also offers multi-day trail rides with farmhouse accommodation — highly recommended.

Getting There

Dartmoor is in Devon, South West England. The nearest airport is Exeter (EXT, approximately 40 minutes by car). By train, travel to Exeter St Davids (2.5 hours from London Paddington) and arrange a transfer. By car, take the A38 and follow signs to Princetown.

Who is this for?

Good for

  • All levels — beginners and experienced riders are equally well catered for
  • Those wanting miles of open, wild moorland right from the stable door
  • Riders who enjoy unpredictable British weather as part of the adventure
  • Anyone keen on multi-day trail rides with farmhouse overnight stops

Not ideal for

  • Those expecting flat, easy terrain — Dartmoor is boggy and uneven
  • Riders who want guaranteed sunshine or dry conditions
  • Those seeking luxury facilities — this is a working moorland yard

Dartmoor riding at its best. My horse — a stocky moorland cross called Bodmin — was completely at home on the open moor, picking his way through boggy ground with total confidence. The guide knew every inch of the terrain and took us to a dramatic tor viewpoint I'd never have found alone. The centre is well-run, the horses are in good condition, and the scenery is genuinely spectacular. A proper English riding experience.
