About

There is no riding experience quite like this one. The Cairo Pyramids Stables operate from the village of Nazlet El-Semman, right at the edge of the Giza plateau, and their horses take riders on routes that pass directly alongside — and sometimes between — the Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.

The stables offer everything from one-hour sunset rides to full-day desert excursions toward the Saqqara or Abu Sir pyramids. The horses are predominantly Arabians and Arab crossbreeds — accustomed to the sandy terrain and the crowds of tourists that can gather near the plateau.

Quality varies between stables in this area (there are several competing operations), so choosing carefully matters. This review covers the stables we personally used and vetted.

Getting There

Fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI). From central Cairo, take a taxi or Uber to the Giza Pyramids area — approximately 45 minutes depending on traffic. The stables are located in Nazlet El-Semman village, directly adjacent to the pyramid plateau.

Nearest accommodation: many riders stay in Giza or the Dokki neighbourhood. The Marriott Mena House hotel sits directly at the pyramid gate and is a wonderful (if expensive) option.

Who is this for?

Good for

  • Confident riders comfortable on forward, energetic horses
  • History and archaeology enthusiasts who want a unique perspective
  • Adventure-seekers happy with basic, working-stable conditions
  • Those on a tight budget who want an extraordinary experience

Not ideal for

  • Complete beginners — horses here are lively and the environment busy
  • Riders with high expectations for horse welfare and facilities
  • Those who need a slow, gentle pace or close supervision

There are few moments in riding that stop your breath completely — cantering past the Sphinx at sunrise is one of them. The horse I rode was a chestnut Arab called Layla, spirited but responsive. The guide knew the terrain well and took us off the main tourist path to quieter desert. Horse welfare is adequate rather than exceptional — these horses work hard — but the ones I saw were in reasonable condition. The experience itself is utterly unforgettable.
